About Aktion Baum

Aktion Baum gGmbH is a non-profit organization based in Sinsheim that is committed to stable and diverse forests. Its work is divided into three areas of action: supporting research for the forest of the future, planting projects for reforestation, and environmental education for children and young people. Plantings take place in coordination with local foresters and authorities, if possible as mixed forests and secured long-term by contracts. The work is financed by donations and partnerships with companies, which also include planting events for companies; surpluses are, according to their own statements, donated or invested in planting projects.

Frequently asked questions about Aktion Baum

What does gGmbH mean?

The small "g" in gGmbH stands for "gemeinnützig" (non-profit). We are a non-profit organization that does not generate profits. All surpluses are donated or invested in our new projects in the following year.

Who works at Aktion Baum?

The Aktion Baum team consists of various people from different sectors of the economy. However, we are united by the common desire to sustainably reforest local forests and combat climate change. Founder Lars Hermes came up with the unique idea of Aktion Baum when he learned how expensive it is to plant a tree and that there must be other ways to help the forest.

What is the Aktion Baum expert network?

The expert network consists of four renowned researchers and experts who, among other things, research and teach in the fields of forest science and ecophysiology and support us in technical decisions. For example, they can help us assess which trees can and cannot be planted in which regions to create a healthy and biodiverse forest. In addition, our experts accompany us on many other projects and are thus our content-related "captain" and the guarantee that our projects comply with the latest scientific knowledge.

How do you select your projects?

Since we are a non-profit organization, we plant where we get land. But of course, only as long as the areas have been checked by our experts beforehand and are suitable for planting a forest that is as biodiverse as possible (mixed forest). For all collaborations that go beyond planting projects, we are open to all kinds of creative cooperation. However, we are very careful not to enter into collaborations with companies that contradict our philosophy.

Can I visit the planted areas?

Yes, of course! And not only that: you can also help plant the trees. Whether alone, with friends, in a team or with colleagues. Through planting projects where everyone can help, we also try to educate people about the serious situation of our local forests and inspire everyone to participate. Check our map to see how many trees we have planted where (as of end of 23). If you are interested, please send a message to info@aktion-baum.org

Who owns the planted trees?

The trees belong to the owners of the respective areas. As a rule, there is a contract of measures with which the forest owners commit to planting the trees as agreed and not to clear them prematurely.

Will the trees be cut down again quickly?

No, of course not! The goal is stable and aging-capable forests in which sustainable forestry is practiced. However, if intervention is necessary prematurely from a forestry perspective (e.g. pest infestation) or to restore traffic safety, this is implemented on the basis of the latest scientific knowledge.

Why do you only plant in Germany?

During the development of Aktion Baum, we realized how many organizations focus on forests in South America, Africa or other parts of the world. We greatly appreciate their work, but we also see the problem here in Germany. And here there is a lack of organizations that raise awareness and implement the issue directly. Our local forests have suffered greatly in recent years and without reforestation, climate change cannot be countered. Therefore, we mainly focus on forests in Germany, but also in Austria and Switzerland.

Can I work at Aktion Baum?

There is a lot to do at Aktion Baum, and therefore we are constantly looking for diligent employees who want to help the forest and nature as much as we do. Our job vacancies are advertised on our website under Jobs, and diligent and committed interns are also in good hands with us.
