Frequently asked questions about Speicherstadt Kaffeerösterei
ARE TOURS OF THE ROASTERY OFFERED?
Unfortunately, tours are not possible. But similar to small breweries, where you can sit around the brewing kettles and watch the brewmasters at work, it's the same with our coffee roastery. Since our roasting plant is located in the middle of the guest area, you can watch our roastmasters at work and ask them all sorts of questions about coffee, roasting and preparation, as long as they have time. For hygiene and insurance reasons, however, only our employees have direct access to the roasting area.
WHY ARE ROASTED COFFEE PRICES RISING?
Several global developments are influencing the cost of high-quality coffee.
Rising green coffee prices: Crop failures, higher wages and production costs, as well as market speculation, have doubled prices on coffee exchanges. Our directly traded coffees are also affected.
Higher transport costs: Due to detours caused by Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and low water levels in the Panama Canal, freight rates have risen sharply.
Energy prices: The transition to renewable energies and new gas and electricity contracts have increased our production costs.
General cost increases: Packaging, wages, forwarding and financing costs have risen significantly.
New legal requirements: EU regulations on supply chains and sustainability require additional effort.
Why now?
We were able to absorb price increases for a long time, but current developments leave us no choice. Our quality remains unchanged – thank you for your loyalty!
DOES SPEICHERSTADT KAFFEERÖSTEREI BELONG TO A LARGE-SCALE ROASTERY?
No. Speicherstadt Kaffeerösterei is an owner-managed private roastery, founded in 1994 and operated by Hacienda San Nicolás GmbH. You can find out more about our history HERE!
IS THE COFFEE ROASTERY WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE?
Yes, there is a wheelchair lift with a key switch in the stairwell. Please press the radio bell on the lift, then someone will come with the key and help you. Important: the lift does not belong to us but to our landlord, who is also responsible for repairs and maintenance. Please call us before your visit (Tel.: 040 537 99 85 -10 or -11) to check whether the lift is currently being repaired/maintained. A wheelchair-accessible toilet is located on the 1st floor (accessible by passenger lift). The EURO key fits here if you have one yourself, otherwise please ask someone from our café or factory shop team to unlock it for you.
DO YOU ALSO HAVE FAIR TRADE COFFEE?
Yes and no. Through personal contacts with farmers and increasing direct imports without various intermediaries, we try to create transparency and build sustainable business relationships as much as possible. However, this only works if all partners are satisfied. Paying a fair price for quality is an essential basis for this.
ARE THE COFFEES ALSO SUITABLE FOR FULLY AUTOMATIC MACHINES?
Yes. Precisely because we roast our coffees for a relatively long time and to a medium-dark degree, they are "roasted through", therefore easy to grind and not oily, making them ideal for preparation with fully automatic machines.
HOW IS COFFEE BEST STORED?
Coffee begins to lose its aroma immediately after roasting. We therefore recommend buying whole beans, storing them in aroma-protected containers and grinding the beans only immediately before preparation. Cooling slows down the aging process. Since coffee is highly hygroscopic - i.e. it absorbs foreign odors - it should also be stored airtight for this reason. We recommend our Coffee Vacs in various sizes for this purpose.
